ChatGPT as an Intelligent Tutor to Aid in Student Learning

Chereen Swank & Dr. Minder Chen

Abstract

ChatGPT is an application of a large language model (LLM) that was launched by OpenAI in November last year. It has sparked a frenzy in many industries, including education. This new AI chatbot not only can carry dialogue with users but also create content for various applications. This model even produces programming code. The education system is facing opportunities and challenges in how to incorporate ChatGPT into students’ learning experiences.

This research project will explore the perspectives of how ChatGPT can be used to support and enhance student learning. Students may take advantage of the convenience and accessibility of ChatGPT. It can provide immediate answers to questions and assist with studying and test preparation. ChatGPT can be used to create a personal learning experience by playing the role of an intelligent tutor. It can also be used to create learning plans, custom learning materials, and self-assessment tools. However, students should be aware of ChatGPT’s limitations. Such limitations include generated answers classified as “hallucinations” along with inaccurate responses maintaining the need to evaluate and verify ChatGPT-generated responses.

ChatGPT offers students the potential to personalize their learning experience. It can adapt to individual education levels, accommodate student needs, as well as provide immediate feedback. The most effective way students can learn how to use ChatGPT as an intelligent tutor is to introduce prompt engineering strategies from a learner’s perspective. We will survey prompts published from different sources that promote active learning. These prompts will be classified according to Bloom Taxonomy which is a framework for categorizing learning objectives and outcomes into six cognitive levels, i.e., remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating.
