The Relationship Between Pessimistic Environmental Behaviors Versus Optimistic Environmental Actions Amongst Individuals

Sarah Gutierrez & Dr. Lindsey O’Connor

Abstract

Research on environmental individual responsibility is important, because all individuals in society should be concerned with caring and protecting the environment to promote the longevity of the planet. Previous research has indicated that individuals that feel personally pessimistic about their individual contribution to protecting the environment are less likely to take environmental action and responsibility for their own actions. My research question is: what motivates individuals to make lifestyle choices such as contributing their time and money to preserve the planet? I conduct a secondary data analysis of 2021 General Social Survey Data (GSS) to answer my research question. I find a statistically significant relationship between individuals that are pessimistic about their environmental impact are less environmentally friendly, but individuals that feel individually responsible are optimistic about making an environmental impact on a personal level. I declare this relationship by using a Pearson’s two-tailed Correlation test. I show that individuals that feel individually responsibly towards the well-being of the environment are more likely to action in the preservation of the environment.
