When We Die: An Observation of the Human Relationship with Death

Kayla Doornbos & Dr. Colleen Delaney

Abstract

The relationship with death is one of the most complicated relationships a human being can have with anything or anyone. Death is oftentimes considered a taboo topic of discussion in the United States. Previous research shows that humans deal with death and dying in a multitude of ways, both emotionally and physically, which is why there are so many different ways to dispose of a body and grieve the loss of a loved one. Both quantitative and qualitative questions were answered in a survey that 65 people anonymously partook in. The results of this survey suggest that younger generations do not fear death as much as older generations, and younger generations want to have open discussions about death and dying. The results also show that people prefer to grieve in numbers. The implications for society include adopting a healthy relationship with death on a societal level and bring awareness to healthy grieving practices.
