Media Trust and Climate Change

Melody Nene & Dr. Lindsey O’Connor

Abstract

Climate change and the effects it has on the environment are an important topic for our generation, future generations, and the earth, which is not being taken as seriously as it should be. More needs to be done to stop the spread of climate change or action taken to stop its current effects of it. The media has an important role in giving society the information needed to stop climate change from progressing. The more we know about the severity of people’s attitudes about distrust in the media, the more society can benefit from this by realizing that the information the media is providing us is not being taken as seriously. I want to know how one’s level of distrust in the media affects one’s attitudes about the severity of climate change in the world and in America. I conducted a secondary data analysis of the 2021 General Social Survey Data to answer my research question using a scale of 1 – 10. I will use a Pearson’s correlation test to expect to find a significant relationship between media trust and the impact of climate change and the level of trust in the media influences people’s attitudes about climate change.
