Abstract
Under severe corrosive environments, materials used in industrial infrastructures can experience corrosion specific damage that assists in the propagation of cracks. Perifast is a computational peridynamics code for multi-physics simulations and can was designed to model crack propagation and material damage due to the electrochemical corrosion process. An important feature of perifast is its use of convolutions implemented as Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) and pointwise multiplication. Our model accounts for both mechanical and electrochemically-induced damage using these Fourier methods. The combination of these causes corrosion and their coupling causes challenges for simulations. Experimental measurements are selected to aid in the selection of parameters, which were not previously known. Some parameters are dependent on the specific properties of the tested materials while others are simply relevant to numerical implementation. To validate the model, results are compared to experimental data provided by experiments done at CSUCI by our colleagues C. Hauck and T. Ruiz.
