The Perception of Water Pollution Affecting the Neighborhood

Verenise Reza & Dr. Lindsey O’Connor

Abstract

For my research project, I am researching whether one’s perception of whether their neighborhood has been affected by water pollution affects how dangerous they think water pollution is? People living in different countries say that water pollution is dangerous, and then we have those who believe it does not affect them. People explain that water pollution affects people, animals, and plants since they depend on water. Water pollution is caused by people dumping chemical waste into the water that runs into different places. What are some things that water pollution can include nuclear sewage, disease, its causes, chemicals, thermal, agriculture, oil, airborne, and microbiological pollution. I have conducted a secondary data analysis of the 2021 General Social Survey (GSS) to be able to answer my research question. I conducted a correlation database to determine whether statistical evidence shows that people care about this problem. I found that some people are concerned about it, and some do not care about answering this topic. I believe that the reason why this happens is that people are not truly informed about the damage that water pollution can bring to their health. This research is essential because past research allows us only to know where water pollution comes from but not how it affects the neighborhood or if their anything being done to stop it from affecting them.
