The Influence of Social Class on Environmental Concerns and Attitudes

Gladys Paniagua & Dr. Lindsey O’Connor

Abstract

Previous research has indicated that environmental concern and attitudes are important to understand and protect the planet. Human activity has negatively impacted the environment by methods of pollution. Since environmental issues are largely caused by human activity it is important to identify what motivates some to participate in environmentally friendly behavior and why others choose to ignore the issue. Looking at how social class influences environmental concern will help identify if class is a factor. Understanding how various social classes perceive environmental concern will also help us better understand what contributes to environmental behavior barriers. I conducted a secondary data analysis using the General Social Survey (GSS) 2021 data to answer my research question. Using an Anova test the findings were that the middle and upper class are generally more concerned about the environment in comparison to the lower class.
