Abstract

What is Mathematics identity (MI)? MI is a social- and self-perceptive motivational construct that describes people current beliefs, professional goals and understanding of their future roles in the field of mathematics. MI can be used as an indicator for student professional development and advising. Usually, students’ beliefs about their own competence in mathematics directly impact their MI and influence their choices of majors and class projects. Some studies show mathematics identities indirectly influence students’ future professions, in associations with their interests and external recognition in mathematics. MI can be used for professional development especially in STEM disciplines and is a critical factor in professional performance and wellbeing. Students who identify positively with mathematics are more likely to pursue advanced courses and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics related occupations. In this project, we have researched studies done on correlations between students’ math identity and language production. Additionally, we have conducted our own research and acquired data from two different age groups: university students and 8th grade students and statistically compared the two samples.
