Satwiwa, now known as Rancho Sierra Vista located in the Santa Monica Mountains was once chumash land, with colonization the area was converted for ranching. Over the years the land had many owners which introduced livestock such as cows, horses and sheep. The outcome of such introductions on top of agricultural production left the area depleted of its native plant species. This is an issue the national park service is looking to resolve with a large scale restoration project. This research in particular works with Opuntia Littoralis (Prickly Pear Cactus), exploring the effect of pad generation on the vitality of a transplant. Pad generation being the main variable in treatment comes from indigenous methodology of propagating cochineal on mature pads while younger pads were consumed.\u00a0 Another factor being considered is watering versus no watering. Each transplant is being given about 1 gallon of water biweekly for the first two waterings then is lessened with the preceding weeks. Given that cactus are overall a very resilient species, watering being done at a decreased rate is proposed to not overwhelm the transplant but still provide a jumpstart for its ability to root on anthropogenically depleted land that’s overwhelmed with non-native species. At the end of the study root length will be documented and compared to determine which generation and watering method is best for the most efficient and effective transplant. The overarching goal is\u00a0\u00a0 to see if indigenous methodology with prickly pear use is cross applicable with modern day restoration need.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
