Our research goal is to understand microbial decomposition of dead plant roots, and its implications for soil carbon sequestration. A systematic review, a process of methodically identifying, appraising, and synthesizing research publications, was conducted to identify the knowledge gaps in microbial decomposition of dead plant roots, including: the ecosystems observed, the geographical locations of study, experimental methodologies (in situ, or laboratory microcosms), the types of samples collected (plants and soil), the methodologies used to assess root decomposition, and describe the populations within the microbial communities.

In the systematic review, specific keywords and variations were used to search for papers in the Web of Science and SCOPUS: Decomposition, Decomposition and Plants, Decomposition and Roots, Decomposition and Plants and Roots, Decomposition and Plants and Roots and Microorganisms, Decomposition and Plants and Roots and Microbes. The publications were then imported into Covidence, where a structured screening process was conducted across three rounds: Title and Abstract screening, Full text review, and Data Extraction. Each reference was assessed by two independent reviewers, and a third reviewer to settle conflicts. Inclusion criteria keywords included the following: Plant roots, microbial community data, bacterial and fungal, root litter and roots, decomposition, degradation, and detritus. The exclusion criteria keywords were the following: Animal, human, insects, plant facilities, and litter. Additionally, we were careful to look for terms with similar meaning such as below ground litter and root litter. It was also considered how an inclusion term was used, such as decomposition of root exudates. Data extraction of the remaining 121 references is currently in progress. Currently, the majority of studies in this field were conducted in Germany, USA, China, Russia, and France. Over the past decade, the number of publications have increased, reflecting growing interest. In addition, this type of research spans agricultural and biological sciences, environmental science, and soil science. This review reveals geographic trends, methodological approaches, and interdisciplinary interest in microbial root decomposition research.

Oral Presentation

10:45am – 12:15pm
Del Norte 2530

Biology

Barbara Reque, Irene Ochoa, Leniha LaGarde, Krisha Algoso, & Dr. Caryl Ann Becerra Soil serves as a crucial habitat for plants and the diverse array of microorganisms responsible for decomposing them, making it a significant sink for carbon dioxide.
