Various pathways have been discovered that may contribute to the creation and accumulation of senescent cells, specifically the PI3K and mTOR pathway. With the discovery of these pathways novel agents have also been synthesized to observe if they may alter interaction between these pathways. GSK1059615 being a novel agent was discovered to be able to inhibit both the PI3k and the mTOR pathway that cells utilized to communicate with one another while becoming senescent. The design of the study was to utilize GSK1059615 in varying concentrations: 0.6mM, 0.2mM, 0.06mM, 0.002mM. The model organism chosen for this study was the planaria flatworm and it was introduced to those varying concentrations for a 48-hour incubation period which was found not to be ideal as the planaria in the higher concentrated wells began to decompose. The specimens were then to be analyzed through mass spectrometry.
